Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. -Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
It’s a whirlwind time of year in our household. We often refer to it as our “celebration season.” Between May 1 and July 20, all six members of our family (dog included!) have a birthday. My husband and I also celebrate our wedding anniversary, and we have Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Not to mention other special days for our loved ones and holidays during that time. These occasions make for the best time of year for our family! They are also some of the most challenging.
These celebrations combined with the end of school, a start of a new routine for the kids in summer, and the demands of work and home (weeds everywhere!), also make it a stressful time of year. I feel the loss of life-giving routines like weekly date nights with my husband and regular connection with my small group, which meets less frequently in the summer.
In addition, unexpected hard things are going on in the world around me and with people whom I know and care for greatly. We had close friends experience a devastating, life-changing, loss on July 4th. If I’m being honest, lately I feel like I’m on autopilot on the good days and overwhelmed but managing on the not-so-good days.
During busy or hard seasons, having “my best day” – the day in which balance strikes –, is a rare gift.
During these times it is easy to get disconnected from my relationship with God.
During these times, I am grateful for Post-Its®™.
Not only because I’m a huge fan of Post-Its®™, and all office supplies in general, but I use them to write down scripture versus that speak to me. And I hang them. Everywhere. Bedroom mirror. Bathroom wall. Kitchen sink. Fridge door. Car dashboard. Daily Planner. I do this to ensure when I position myself ahead of God - - running between thing to thing, or assuming I have the right answers - - that I have reminders. Reminders of His word, His truth and His grace. Reminders that my house is built firmly on the rock. Reminders that His yoke is easy and His burden is light.
As we near the close of “celebration season,” I am eager to dig back in to my scheduled and dedicated time with God. But as I reflect on the past several weeks, I can’t help but think about how grateful I am for those Post-It®™ reminders.
How can you keep rooted during your busy seasons of the year?
Which verses can you put on a Post-It®™ today?
